I am pleased to be selected by Ikono TV and Artconnect Berlin as their first spotlight artist for a collaborative series they are working on together. Ikono and ACB are inviting Berlin based artists to take part in a year long series of open calls to promote the visibility of the arts on a local an international scale. Once selected, Ikono TV create a video of one work by the artist.

In order to keep up with our growth as Berlin’s number one platform for creatives we will be holding a fundraiser auction at our 1 Year Anniversary Party. For this auction we are kindly asking artists from all different disciplines to consider donating a piece of work. It can be anything from an original to a print to a piece of found art. All proceeds from the auction will be used to help us expand and build our network and to bring more exposure to all the artists living and working in Berlin. By now we've got artworks from Egill Saebjörnsson, Reynold Reynolds, Jose Romussi and Klub7!

In just under a year we’ve gone from a few hopeful volunteers and artists to a comprehensive and diverse network of over 2,300 users from vastly different backgrounds. This has all been possible because of our wonderful volunteers and the unparalleled willingness and eagerness of the creative community of Berlin.
Along with our networking platform, we have a widely read blog covering events and happenings in Berlin, as well as interviews with artists and musicians alike. Our extensive coverage of this distinct world and our specific user-base gives us a unique position within the city’s creative scene.
Our online presence continues to grow, as does our brick-and-mortar operation on Boddinstraße, which includes our own offices, co-working space, workshop space, and the many events and exhibitions we put on every month. Our popular Networking Breakfast, for example, brings together artists with curators and has played host to many important artists and organizations living and working in Berlin.
ARTCONNECT BERLIN was created by artists and people related to the art scene who needed a tool to stayed connected and to network with the many creative people the city of Berlin has to offer. There have been many success stories amongst our users in areas such as job searching, which our platform makes simple through our often frequented “Opportunities” section and weekly newsletter. We are also very active on all the popular social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr, which we use to interact with and feature artists from our platform.
Now, after one year of rapid growth, we would like to celebrate with you in a long weekend full of art, music, and love!!!

Recently Seen / Deutsches Architektur Zentrum / Art Connect Berlin / Hamburger Bahnhof
I went the
recent opening at DAZ – the Deutsches Architektur Zentrum for a show called Structural Studies, a collaboration
between duo June 14, Toshihiko Mitsuya and Alex Schweder La. An interesting
group of artists/architects with admirable practices individually, however the
outcome of this project seems a little underwhelming. Using aluminum sheeting
common to Toshihiko Mitsuya’s practice, the group created a large scale series
of objects treating the materials with folding processes, weaving, etc
exploring the possibilities of form, volume, space and egress. The combination of
material and the treatment that the group employed lost some of the delicacy
that Mitsuya achieves when working with the same material in a smaller scale, leaving some of the intentions for the objects unclear. However the
contribution by artist/architect Schweder La is yet to come – Schweder La will
intervene with the installation – using mold in some way I think. I am going to
a round table discussion next week with the curator and contributing artists to
hopefully get a better insight into the project. However each artist is worth checking
out individually.

I also went to the Networking Breakfast organized by and hosted at the head quarters of ArtConnect Berlin in Neukölln. Fashion and lifestyle photographer Christoph Neumann presented a snap shot of his past and current projects. Artstars Nadja Sayej also gave a talk which can be heard online here – about her work with Artstars, some info and tips about Berlin and an insight into her program.

And I also managed to get to
the opening of the latest show at the Hamburger Bahnhof of New York artist
Anthony McCall, called Five Minutes of Pure Sculpture. This is the first time
the artist has presented a solo show in a German museum.

Entering into the exhibition
space one is completely immersed in darkness – with only the light from the
installation permeating the space. Throughout the large hall (which was
formerly a train station) are a series of projections on both the floor
and walls drawing linear forms in electric white light. Slowly billowing from
various sources are gentle plumes of dry ice being haphazardly directed by invisible
fans. As the dry ice passes through the shaft of light being projected it
creates an ephemeral and constantly evolving architecture which the audience
can view from the exterior and interior. McCall has been developing this series since the 70’s which intersect drawing, film, animation and sculpture.

ART CONNECT BERLIN Networking Breakfast
This
morning I went to a networking breakfast organized by ART CONNECT BERLIN http://artconnectberlin.com hosted at
the NODE Centre for Curatorial Studies http://www.nodecenter.org
in Kreuzberg. As the title suggests, you eat breakfast whilst chatting and
meeting new people, after which time there is a presentation by artists,
curators, writers or whoever wants to share information about their creative
practice or upcoming project. The presenters today were Australian curator
George Ironside whom spoke about her experience in curating and working within
street art in Berlin and Melbourne, including the development of her artist agency
IronartTOURS http://ironsideart.de. The
second presenter was Finnish artist Saana Inari who showed a video work and
spoke about some upcoming projects. Saana’s work was particularly beautiful;
she uses animals as a metaphor for transformation and combines animation with
video and performance. Check out her work on her website www.saana-inari.net
